Window display design
I have recently been asked to design a window display for a SNEAK PREVIEW of a Fine Furnishings Show during Gallery Night & Day event in downtown Milwaukee.
I have done merchandising for a local home accent store in the past, but designing a catchy window display is a bit of a different story. Calling upon my interior design, merchandising, and visual presentation experience, I have taken the challenge and completed the display.
Some displays are more creative than others. It depends on the type of business and the product being promoted. Unique products will call for unusual ways of display, combination of small/large items, props, accessories (as shown below) etc. However this approach may change when you are displaying several of the same item (perhaps in various color/finishes) keeping in mind the accessibility and fast turn-around time from display to purchase to restock.
Following these basic design principles will enhance your displays and hopefully generate more sales:
- keep in simple
- keep in clean
- change it frequently
- direct bright light is crucial to highlight the display
- group alike items together – shapes, colors, styles
- remember to work in 3s or 5s – odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye and keep it traveling through the display
- vary height and depth of the display – use props wherever possible
- use motion if possible
- accessorize – think outside the box
