The Energy Fair
Saturday was a great day for a road trip. In celebration of the beginning of the calendar summer, my husband and I hit the road to Custer, WI, where The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) hosts an annual Energy Fair. It took us a little over 2h to get there, but the drive was enjoyable and we were both excited to explore the grounds.

As I volunteered at the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance (WGBA) booth, Brian scavenged the entire fair for best products, hands-on workshops, building demonstrations and locally grown foods. He was able to join tour of the MREA grounds to see clean energy systems and how the association figured out a way to product 100% of their electrical needs on-site! When I was released from my volunteering duties, we treated ourselves with a delicious lunch while listening to the keynote speaker (Alan Weisman, who wrote “The world without us”). One of the most innovative and inspiring sites at the fair was the Experimental Dwelling for a Greener Environment (E.D.G.E) model home, which incorporated numerous green elements and techniques known of in a residential construction arena. Afterwords we explored the Marketplace; we talked to the solar energy experts, roofers, a cabinet maker, a rain barrel manufacturer, a soy candle maker, a Milwaukee-based construction company etc. All the exhibitors were welcoming and very informative regardless of what your level of sustainable knowledge was. The greatest thing about the fair was the energy and the feeling of empowerement amongst both the attendees and the vendors. We have to work together for the greater good of the environment and that was the number one message of this event.
