Controlling the scale of your home
What sells new construction homes is functional and open layout kitchen, relaxing and suited for two master bathroom as well as high ceiling living areas. Who wouldn’t like to entertain friends and family in a grandiose 20′ high ceiling space with a beautiful fireplace, ornate mental, incredibly tall series of windows brightening the space. With such a dramatic area, you’d think it should be pretty easy to decorate it to marry its unique verticality with your personal style. You may quickly come to a conclusion that it is not at all easy. In fact, there are home owners who get so overwhelmed with the dwarfing size of their home that they would rather sell than hire a professional designer to help bring the human scale back to their lives.

How to deal with vertical spaces?
- CROWN MOLDING – adding crown molding half way up the tall walls will help close the living area in and ground the dead space above
- WARM COLOR SCHEME – painting the walls rich chocolate browns, mustard yellows, peanut tan will bring comfort to the room and visually bring it together
- ARTWORK – go for large scale artwork and/or mirrors to fill those empty walls; go for series of 2 or 3 versus individual pieces; you may also want to display collectibles, foliage, glass or ceramic vases.
- SOFT WINDOW COVERINGS – for those floor-to-ceiling windows, be sure to apply functional remote-controlled blinds/solar shades but also soft window coverings which will help control the sound, the glare as well as create a cozy feel throughout
Each space is different, each home owner has a unique design style and needs. The above tips are general design approaches to dealing with tall ceiling spaces. But if you still need help, you know where to find me….
