Color trends for 2009/2010

I am very passionate about what I do. I’m sure you have noticed. One of the ways I stay on top is by attending various industry conferences and shows. I not only satisfy my constant need of travel and discovery, but also learn something new about design, products and trends. Yesterday, I attended Coverings Tile+Stone Expo in Chicago, IL and I have to tell you, I was amazed by some beautiful local and international collections of tile, mosaic and natural stone I found. Most importantly, I had a chance to participate in a Color Trends & Forecasting Seminar lead by Pantone color forecaster, writer and color specialist, Leatrice Eiseman.

The one and a half hour seminar flew by instantly. Leatrice masterminded the audience with her knowledge, passion. Colorful slides were used to showcase the various applications of color and its trending from fashion, automotive, graphics to home and living. She was funny and clever. Not until later that night did I realize that I should have brought my own copy of Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color by Leatrice Eiseman and had her autograph it. Luckily, I was able to arrange for her to mail me a signed book plate…..How exciting!!!

Leatrice not only explained how the national and international political, economical and cultural situation influences color forecasting but also went through the 2010 color schemes and the reasoning behind them. The nine unique color & design trends for the upcoming year are:

  • Greenmarket tomato puree, green apple, dijon mustard, super lemon – healthy & artisonal foods
  • Resourceful sequoia, golden ochre, aqua sky, earth and mauve orchid – preserving and reserving
  • Transformations crushed violet, willow green, creme de menthe, deep blue – nostalgic and idyllic
  • Ambiance silver pink, taupe-cast brindle, stucco, desert sage, coffee beans – comfort and safety
  • Gatherings cypress green, smoke blue, sand, oasis, copper coin – inspired by the continent of Africa
  • Galaxy peridot, deep blue, stormy violet, orchid, turquoise – purveyor and source of light
  • High Definition amaranth, paisley purple, malaga wine, flower fuchsia – classicism and modernism
  • Pastiche lavendula, absinthe green, chipmunk, mimosa – fun and unexpectedness
  • Tinged Neutrals off-white, champagne beige, luster neutrals – play it safe

The one color that stands out and is believed to be the color of 2009 is Mimosa 14-0848 TCX. Its vibrant and cheerful nature speak to the hope and brighter future we all look forward to. It is the color of optimism and reassurance. May happiness be with you :)

I felt that the seminar was well prepared, well presented and extremely helpful to professionals like myself who must understand the history and influence of color when designing interiors. Interior design and architecture, like fashion and graphics, changes constantly and we must challenge ourselves and experiment with color to preserve the uniqueness of our form of art.
